La película empieza como todo en Los Ángeles: en la autopista. Aquí es donde Sebastian conoce a Mia, gracias a un desdeñoso claxon en medio de un atasco, que refleja a la perfección el estancamiento de sus respectivas vidas. Los dos están centrados en las esperanzas habituales que ofrece la ciudad. Sebastian intenta convencer a la gente en pleno siglo XXI de que les guste el jazz tradicional y Mia solo quiere acabar por una vez una prueba de casting sin que la interrumpan con un «gracias por venir». Ninguno de los dos imagina que su inesperado encuentro les va a llevar por un camino que jamás habrían podido recorrer solos.
